Kindle update brings account creation feature

Amazon has just detailed a new software update for the third-generation, six-inch Kindle. Version 3.0.1. lets owners create Amazon.com accounts directly from the Kindle rather than just sign in. It also boosts overall performance.

The update can be transferred and installed onto the Kindles over USB, and Amazon promises to bring the update wirelessly over coming weeks to all other devices. Updating manually is not very straightforward, however, and requires users to download the software on a computer and copy it to the Kindle's root folder.
