Ovi Maps beta due in September with new features

At Nokia World on Tuesday, the event's namesake announced that its Ovi Maps software has received a few significant updates. Users will have the chance to check in locations on social networks such as Facebook, RenRen and StudiVZ through text message or e-mail. Viewing checkins only needs a web browser, although any native app should also show the results.

Real-time traffic data will likewise be accessible, as will gas stations, and speed limit information. Nokia is now including public transportation maps from more than 85 cities worldwide. Symbian^3 users also get gesture control: a pinch will control control zoom, and a pan or swipe will move around maps.

Searches are getting better, with suggestions, history and spelling corrections. The software will also make its suggestions based on proximity to points of interest.

A public beta is coming later in September, with an official release due before year's end. Symbian^3 provides the ideal platform, but Symbian S60 (also known as Symbian^1) is also an option.
