EA My Garden shwos Nintendo 3DS much faster
EA today showed off a first game for the Nintendo 3DS that backs beliefs that the handheld is using a much faster platform than initially suspected. The garden creation game My Garden has both much more geometry than a typical DS/DSi game but has high dynamic range effects for bloom and depth of field to create a soft background. Many of the in-game objects also have their own individual shadows.
The game also makes use of the 3DS' dual cameras to snap photos of a garden for sharing online with friends.
Capcom had recently shown its own tech demo using MT Framework, the engine that powers Resident Evil and other games on all its computer and TV console platforms. The choice gives it the HDR and depth of field effects as well as motion blur, full shadows with self-shadowing effects, and normal mapping to add a 3D effect to textures.
The device is already known to have a Pico200 graphics chip that will handle much of the added demand, the sheer added detail supports notions that Nintendo has picked a Marvell Armada chip that should greatly improve performance. An early Kid Icarus demo at the 3DS unveiling didn't show much of the game system's potential.
Nintendo has said it will commit to a ship date on September 29 and is rumored to be shipping the 3DS on November 20 in Japan. [via Kotaku]
