7-inch iPad claimed coming with front and back cameras

Analyst sees 7-inch iPad and dual cameras in 2011

At times contentious Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar today claimed that a seven-inch iPad was not only coming but that at least one future iPad would have dual cameras. While suspicions have been raised that Apple would at least have a front camera for FaceTime support, the researcher believed that it would have both front and back cameras. The finished devices would arrive sometime in 2011, Kumar said.

The assertions haven't been verified and aren't necessarily accurate. However, most rumors have put an iPad refresh early next year or sooner.

Apple has regularly upgraded iOS devices once a year and may simply be trying to time any launch closer to the anniversary of the late January unveiling of the iPad this year rather than any kind of accelerated path. Competition is nonetheless ramping up faster in the tablet space than it did in smartphones and has been focusing on the camera as a possible edge: the Samsung Galaxy Tab has both front and back cameras that can be used not just for video chat but for apps that need a back camera and would still make sense on a tablet, such as augmented reality or barcode readers.

A smaller design would also help lower the price and could address compplaints from those who feel the iPad's 1.5-pound weight is too big or too heavy for reading. [via GigaOM]

    Competition?

You mean with tablets based on an OS which, by Google's own words isn't made for tablets? Tablets which are even more "big smartphone" than the iPad? At least the iPad has apps specifically made to take advantage of the larger screen and higher resolution.

    Wow!!

This guy is good...I never would have thought about putting a camera on an iPad, much less one on both sides like an iPhone. And his prediction of "sometime in 2011"...once again, that is a ballsy call there to tie it down to such short window. Bet this guy makes millions for his clients!!

    Another rumor

Refers to a 2-inch iPad with 7 cameras.

    Why stick with...

...only two cameras? Why not just say its going to have a distributed array of cameras around the front and back edges of the new ipad so it can follow you on facetime without your having to adjust the ipad to keep your face centered.

And it's going to have the 1st quad-core A4 cip, plus 128GB of memory and the new apple macro-usb port.

And it's going to be a Retina-2 display with 1600-by-1200 resolution and will be fully readable in direct sunlight with a 16-hour 16,000 maH liquid-metal-hydride (lqmh) battery.

Plus it will be GSM and CDMA capable.

Did I cover just about every aluminum-foil feature?

Oh yeah. With multiple cameras, you can do the 3D facial snapshot. Can't wait for Apple's distant next generation hologram iPad.

    Re: Competition?

Google said it wasn't geared for tablets and their large screens. That doesn't mean it wasn't "made" for tablets.

You do realize iOS wasn't made for tablets either, until Apple updated it.

At least the iPad has apps specifically made to take advantage of the larger screen and higher resolution.

Yes, because there's no way anyone who develops for Android will ever develop an app that will take advantage of a higher resolution. Nope, never happen. Google can try all they want, put out new versions of the OS to support it, but developers just won't do it.
