HP outs three printers with iOS 4.2 support

HP has taken the wraps off three new printers that have the company's ePrint technology that lets them print images or documents sent by e-mail as well as AirPrint with iOS 4.2. The most anticipated and interesting model is the Photosmart eStation that ships with a detachable seven-inch touchscreen tablet, seen earlier. The all-in-one device can print, fax, scan and copy documents.

The Android tablet lets users print from the web using the ePrint feature. While the tablet is detached, others can still print locally from the printer's redundant controls. The new flagship printer will have the ability to print at up to 9,600x2,400 and uses five ink cartridges. It should already be shipping for $400.

Another new product is the OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus, which improves upon the OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless it replaces with some new additions. It bumps up the touchscreen size from 3.45 inches to 4.3, while the HP ePrintCenter app store gets new content from newfound partners such as Google Docs, Google Maps, Yahoo, PBS, Kraft.com and others.

Users can connect and print through USB, Ethernet, PictBridge and Wi-Fi. The scanner captures images at 4,800PPI, the input tray can hold 250 sheets and there is a 50-sheet auto-document feeder. HP is already shipping the 8500 with a price range of $300 to $500 depending on options.

Also unveiled was an unusual printer taking advantage of the Voodoo-derived Envy label. HP's Envy 100 e-All-In-One sports an uncharacteristically clean design with mechanically retracting input and output paper trays. When not in use the printer is a black plastic rectangle. It can connect to the web to download apps, with users interfacing over a 3.45-inch touchscreen. Print speeds are rated at 30PPM black or 25PPM color, and there are two ink cartridges inside. It will ship on October 4 for $250. [via CNET]

    This is exciting!

Apple already has great experience working with printer manufacturers due to the success of OS X.

I'm sure companies like Brother (who has done an excellent job of providing great OS X drivers since the early days), Epson, et cetera will be adding support to many existing printers soon.

I'm most curious about exactly how this is running behind the scenes. I don't know if they ported CUPS to iOS 4? Be curious if any MacNN/ipodnn reader has some good info on iOS printing internals
