Eye-Fi updates iPhone app for iOS 4

Works with iPhone, iPod Touch

Eye-Fi, best known for its Wi-Fi SD cards, has revamped its free iPhone/iPod touch app to work exclusively with iOS 4.x, allowing wireless transfer from the handheld devices to both a user's computer and some of the popular photo- and video-sharing sites on the web. The free app is only functional for registered owners of an Eye-Fi card (even though the card is not used in conjunction with the app) who have set up a free account with the company's website.

The app uses an EDGE, 3G or Wi-Fi connection to upload photos and screenshots at full resolution to various supported sharing services, such as Costco.com, Dotphoto, Evernote, Facebook, Flickr, Fotki, Gallery2, Kodak Gallery, MobileMe, Movable Type, Phanfare, Photobucket, Picasa, RitzPix, Sharpcast, Shutterfly, SmugMug, Snapfish, TypePad, Vox, Wal-Mart and Webshots. Videos can be also uploaded directly to YouTube.

The app uses the built-in geotagging of the iPhone or iPod Touch, supporting programs like iPhoto 09 and geotagging-friendly sites such as Picasa and Flickr. Photos and videos transferred to a computer can be automatically stored in date-based folders, and users can add or edit destination sites directly from their iPhone or iPod touch as well.

    Greed

So to use their app they require you buy their Eye Fi SD card, even though you don't use the card in any fashion? I realize the app is free, but would it not be better to charge a small fee and let everyone use the app? I know I will never purchase their Eye Fi SD card and I am hardly alone.
