Dell 7-inch Looking Glass tablet teased at event

Dell's namesake chief Michael Dell confirmed [sub. required] the company's 7-inch Looking Glass tablet today at Oracle's conference. He didn't provide more details other than to say it would run Android like the Streak. Dell also didn't mention ship dates and other details.

Leaks have the Looking Glass being faster than the Streak and would use a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 250 processor capable of driving 1080p video, although it may still have the same 800x480 resolution. Dell might count on TV tie-ins to sell the larger tablet, as it might have an ATSC tuner for over-the-air HD and may have AT&T endorsement for streaming TV to U-verse customers. It was originally due to ship with Android 2.1 but will almost certainly have moved to 2.2 or later.

An early roadmap shot had the tablet arriving by the end of the year, though delays in the Streak may have pushed that back further. A 10-inch model was also part of that roadmap and would show in early 2011.

The device may be Dell's first direct competition with the iPad. Although considered a tablet due to its unpocketable size, the Streak is considered by some to be a crossover since it's small enough to work as a phone and even supports cellular voice. At $549, it has struggled to get as much recognition since it costs more than the $499 iPad, albeit with built-in 3G and dual cameras.

The CEO also mentioned that the Streak should be available in retail for the first time with a presence at Best Buy as of next month. [image via Reuters]

    It'll be GREAT!

It will hit all the main marketing bullet points, and yet will suck to use because of software.
