Expanded agreement includes NBC cable content

Netflix and NBC today announced a new content deal that will give Netflix members access to a range of previous season cable and broadcast TV series. Starting next week, shows on will include Saturday Night Live as well as prior season and back-catalogue episodes of Battlestar Galactica, Eureka and Destination Truth. Other prior season content includes series such as 30 Rock, The Office, Law & Order: SVU, Psych and Monk.

Netflix has arrangements to stream the content on any device that works with Watch Instantly in the US, including iPads, iPhones and iPods, all three major game consoles, Blu-ray players and TVs. Membership starts at $9 per month in the US. It's unclear if Netflix will have permission to stream the full slate of NBC shows in Canada.

Of course only in the US. Until the studios can make as much, if not more, from on-line viewing as they can from syndication and distribution deals, they aren't going to ruin those (for some of the shows don't get broadcast for a while in other countries than in the US).

Oh, and note this is a studio/production house thing, not a network deal. NBC doesn't have the rights to put the shows they broadcast onto Netflix, just the ones they produce.

    reality check...

Forget last season... they need to stream *last nights* episodes! They are available to view "free" on various online sites (internationally.) The studios and Netflix are lo$ing out by not making realistic deals in a new era.
