Kno single-screen tablet to take on iPad in classroom

Kno plans a single-screen tablet for students

Kno, which is planning dual-screen tablet later this year, today said that it also plans to bring out a single-screen version soon. It will also be aimed at students and provide digital textbooks, letting students take notes on the touchscreen. This device will have a single, 14.1-inch screen.

Kno's founders also rent physical notebooks, and the dual-screen version will also provide support for digital textbooks. The founders said the Kno will save students enough money to cover the cost of the dual-screen tablet within 13 months of studies because their books are digital, and the single-screen version will be even less costly and pay for itself in seven months. The images are renderings only.

While prices for the single-screen version haven't been revealed, the dual-screen is expected to come in at less than $1,000. Both devices should arrive before year's end, however.

The timing comes just as Apple is also looking to get into the educational market with its iPad, selling discounted bundles for students. A handful of schools have also tried using the tablets on their own for some or all of their classroom material. The iPad is much smaller and provides less room for notes or textbooks, but at $499 it could cost half the price of the dual-screen Kno while also being easier to carry. [via TechCrunch]
