Sonos Controller for iPad released as we test it

Sonos today released its long in coming Sonos Controller for iPad (free, App Store). The app gives a significantly expanded view for steering a Sonos device such as the ZonePlayer S5 and can show the destination zones, the current music, queue and the source list all at once. It works both in landscape and portrait mode.

We've already had the opportunity to test the app and can say it works much more effectively than the iPhone app in most areas; a lot of the menu hunting that takes place on the smaller screen isn't necessary in the iPad app. Advanced features like the alarms and sleep timer are also controllable in pop-overs, so it's possible to quickly set the Sonos to play music or a radio station before going to bed. The size also helps greatly for picking from a large list and shows far more of a queue than on an iPhone or iPod.

Our main complaints are few but notable. It's not immediately obvious how to change zones if you have more than one (it's the home icon on the current zone). Also, the music source list is still very deep and often requires going through several layers unless you already have a favorite station, playlist or track queued up.

Alongside the iPad app, Sonos has also updated its Mac and Windows software to version 3.3. The update primarily adds Spotify support for those European countries that currently use the streaming music service. The update works best with the paid Premium access.

    Gadgets and Gizmos

The Sonos wireless music system is one our favourite gadgets at the moment but the one thing that puts many people off is the price. Well Sonos have designed a free app that works on either the Apple iphone or iPod touch, this eliminates the need for the Sonos controller which is quite expensive to buy. Once you have located and installed the app you will have to set the app up to work with your system. Thankfully the process is amazingly simple, once you open the app for the first time you will be given two options. You can add it to your set up system or use the app to set up your system for the first time. Both options work equally well but I would suggest you set up the system using your pc and then add the app as this was quicker.
