7K750 and 5K750, 7,200RPM and 5,400RPM options
Hitachi has taken the wraps off two new 2.5-inch 750GB mobile hard drives, the Travelstar 7K750 and Travelstar 5K750 hard drives. The 7K750 spins at 7,200RPM, while the 5K750 spins at 5,400RPM. They are the largest capacity mobile hard drives currently available on the market in the 9.5mm segment.
The twin platters in each drive hold 375GB, the result of Hitachi’s new Advanced Format that increases the physical sector size on hard drives from 512 bytes to 4096 bytes. The Travelstar 7K750 7,200RPM mobile hard drive incorporates a 16MB buffer, 3Gb/s SATA interface and consumes 1.8W, a slight power trade-off for the extra performance. The Travelstar 5K750 5,400 RPM mobile hard drive has an 8 MB buffer and a Serial ATA 3Gb/s interface. It offers 0.5 watts low power idle and 1.4 watts power during read/write operations.
The Hitachi Travelstar 5K750 is currently shipping, although pricing has not been detailed. Hitachi Travelstar 5K750 retail hard drive kits will be available in November for $130.

Now that 2.5" drives are approaching truly useful capacities, the prospect of extremely small form factor Raid arrays is tantalizing. Great news for transporting video around!
