Microsoft Mall of America store to open opposite Apple store

Microsoft Minneapolis retail across from Apple's

Microsoft stepped up the pressure on Apple this week with the discovery that the company's upcoming store in the Mall of America in Minneapolis will sit directly opposite the Apple store. The new location is designed to one-up the longstanding rival with a store twice as wide and likely more depth. The Microsoft shop has yet to get an opening date and is only listed as "coming soon," the Pioneer Press noted.

The storefront may open before the November 8 Windows Phone 7 launch, as graphics on the walls now show Windows Phone 7.

Previous Microsoft stores have opened near Apple's before, but the Mall of America store would be the first to sit directly next to an Apple location. The company has made no reservations about the stores being meant to imitate and potentially lure away customers and has gone so far as to have a Genius Bar equivalent, the Answer Desk, and to hold high-profile openings. In many cases, however, the company has used concerts as bait to lure parents that might not otherwise have shown up.

Microsoft has been cautious in opening stores so far and has opened just four locations in a year. Apple usually opens significantly more stores in just a single quarter and currently has a wide international presence reaching as far as China where Microsoft has so far limited itself to the US.

    What pressure?

"Microsoft stepped up the pressure on Apple..." - what pressure? If anything, it's only gonna help Apple to have Microsoft next door. You go into the MS store, have a good laugh, then go over to Apple and start shopping.

    We'll see ...

    ... which one closes first.

My guess is that the Apple people are going to have a BIG party that day, and that it won't be all that long. A year or three at most.

    Predict Nice Contrast

I've been to the MOA Apple store many times and usually you couldn't shoehorn another person into it. It will be interesting to contrast the packed Apple store to the likely desolate MS Store.

    I disagree.

Many peripherals (audio mixers, microphones, external hard drives, etc) can be used by both systems. Apple's in store offerings are a bit pricey and somewhat limited. Having more choices may be a good thing.

As much as M$ annoys me, I do like some of their products (SQL Server, SharePoint, Server 2008) although these won't be at the store.

biggest problem with Microsoft is that they have done nothing innovative since the xbox (and that was really in response to Nintendo/Sony). It seems as though they cannot tolerate any company having success in IT... so they enter existing markets (Zune, Network Hardware, Game Machines, smart phones, Bing...). This "Me Too" mentality really has them lagging. At one time they were agile enough to create decent products (Office 97 was incredible... and still remains a decent, albeit bloated product).

They need to define the markets, not follow

Microsoft should put a couple of dozen

Xbox 360s in the store and that might keep it packed. It could become the local free arcade. There's really no other reason why any consumer would want to come to the Microsoft store. Playing around with some mice and keyboards gets old fast.

once open it will never close. ever. microsoft lost over 8 billion big ones on msn, search, hotmail, etc. in a decade. xbox over 10 billion. zune loses hundred million a year.
no, as long as the cash cow twins come home it will never close.

I would imagine that the MS store is mainly going to be used to help with computer problems and smartphones. I know people go to get help with Apple stuff at the Apple store but you always know the company to talk to. There's the inherent problem with a MS store. If you are having a problem with your Dell, are you going to go into a MS store and have them say it's Dell's issue? I guess they'll be able to sell xbox's and smartphones. It's going to be a disaster if MS has multiple carriers and/or multiple phones. It's like pulling teeth to get Verizon people to activate a verizon-based phone. Can you imagine having newbie MS employees trying to activate the verizon phone? It least they won't have the crush of people waiting since MS smartphones are at best in 4th place.

As for the MS store being 4-times as big as the Apple store, that's a marketing disaster. They aren't going to have 4-times the amount of people in the store as Apple so the MS store will always look empty. MS is just simply clueless.

    XBOX and Games

Can they fix your Dell, HP, Acer or eMachine PC? No!. But I bet you they can sell a zillion XBOX's and Games, perhaps a Zune or two also.

    MS Store is Chum Bucket

I bet they will mirror exactly how the Apple Store setup is. People will be so confused that they bring their WP7 to Apple Store for repair. A confused lady will enter MS Sore and ask for iPhone... sort of like Spongebob Squarepant.

    Discovery... huh?

"Microsoft stepped up the pressure on Apple this week with the discovery that the company's upcoming store in the Mall of America in Minneapolis will sit directly opposite the Apple store."

This "discovery" has been apparent to anyone who has walked around the MOA over the last few months. Or is MacNN implying that this "stepped up" pressure is due to a recent Microsoft discovery that their store is across the hall from the Apple Store? MacNN... where do you get your amazing writers?
