Glasses connect to cellphones

Olympus and Japanese cellular carrier NTT DoCoMo have introduced a head-mounted display (HMD) built for augmented reality. The 'AR Walker' glasses utilize a small display and light guide mounted to the right temple, allowing users to view images in the lower half of the field of view for the right eye.

The new model is an improvement over a similar product released several years ago, according to a Tech-On report. Olympus worked to reduce the weight from 91 grams, as the new model is said to be equivalent to standard glasses. An electronic compass and accelerometer help determine the direction a user is facing.

The HMD, previewed at Ceatec Japan 2010, was connected to NTT DoCoMo's HT-01A cellphone. The augmented reality system was demonstrated on a large display showing Kyoto City. Users were guided to destinations as a virtual guide introduced stores, while looking to the sky brings up weather forecasts.

The companies have yet to announce release dates or pricing.
