Verizon exec elusive on CDMA iPhone, says to ask Apple

Verizon Wireless CEO McAdam elusive on iPhone

Verizon Wireless chief Lowell McAdam today dodged around questions regarding the prospect of an iPhone but put the burden on Apple. At a CTIA press event, McAdam responded to new claims that a Verizon iPhone was being mass produced for early next year by saying that he hadn't seen the specific WSJ rumor but, unusually, said it was Apple's responsibility to announce anything. He warned that this sort of rumor "rolls out every few weeks" but said it was likely just a matter of time for an iPhone or even "a tablet."

"Apple is really the one that has to make that kind of announcement," McAdam said. "At some point our business interests are going to align... I fully expect it, but I don't have anything to say [at the moment]."

The statements didn't amount to confirmation but was somewhat unusual for Verizon, which has usually tried to downplay claims further and safeguard its Android phone sales. The most recent leak reiterated by now widespread beliefs that mass production of CDMA iPhones is beginning near the end of this year for a launch in early 2011, with Qualcomm providing the cellular chipsets.

    Smart answer

He can't very well say, "yes, we're gonna have the iPhone, it'll be X price on Y date," because A) Steve DOES NOT LIKE other companies announcing things ahead of time, and B) some percentage of people who would have walked into Verizon stores in the next several months to buy Droids will hold off, or even have second thoughts and go some other direction.

And he can't say, "no, no iPhone from us, iPhone's are bad, mmm'kay?" because it would A) hurt ongoing relations with Apple, and B) make him/Verizon look foolish when the Verizon iPhone comes out in a few months.

Saying, effectively, "no comment, talk to Apple," and downplaying rumors as "something that happens all the time" is absolutely the best answer for him to give, if they're prepping for a Verizon iPhone. If there's any news here, it's the "or even a tablet" part, which is not really anything more than suggesting that they're open to the idea of a CDMA-enabled iPad, but is useful to know.

They forgot to mention that Apple would never release a product on a monopolistic thieving CDMA network...
