CherryPal ships $188 Android tablet with Wi-Fi
CherryPal, the California-based maker of the $99 Linux netbook for Africa, has just announced the CherryPad America tablet. Its 7-inch, 800x480 touchscreen is matched by Android 2.1 and has access to the Android Market with enough visual performance for 3D gaming. The electronics firm talks up the device as a "sub-iPad" tablet that sits in the category but doesn't compete with Apple's $499 hardware.
Processing comes from a 800MHz Samsung ARM11 CPU, although there's a lightweight 256MB of RAM onboard. Only 2GB of storage is built-in, but a microSD card reader is present for adding more space. It supports regular USB and 3.5mm audio jacks and has its own built-in mic. Wi-Fi is so far the only choice for Internet access.
The CherryPad uses a 3,200mAH polymer battery that is said to offer between six and eight hours of battery life. It weighs 1.1lbs and has an aluminum case.
The device is priced at $188 and is now available exclusively through newfound partner Zecozi. An update to Android 2.2 is promised for later this year.
