Samsung ships enterprise 100GB, 200GB SSDs

Samsung this week said it began offering its 100GB and 200GB solid state drives for enterprise applications. The 3.5-inch form factor drives aim to reduce the long-term costs of main storage media and increase system performance. Storage experts EMC will be the first to utilize these new drives.

The SLC NAND flash chips used in the new drives are based on 40nm architecture, while the controller uses a 3Gbps SATA interface. Random read IOPS performance is set at 47,000, while random write is 29,000 IOPS. In comparison, 15,000RPM hard drives are rated at 350 in either test. The 200GB SSDs read data at 260MBps and write at 245MBps.

The drives are also more power efficient compared to rotating disk drives.
