SuperOneClick Android app brings simple root hacks

The process of opening up Android phones took a major step forward with Sunday's launch of SuperOneClick. As hinted by the name, the crack can expose root-level access on most Android phones, including Android 2.2 devices, with a single button. A separate button also has a limited hack to get around AT&T's app restrictions and allows installing non-Market apps on phones like the HTC Aria or Samsung Captivate.

The app has its limitations and doesn't currently have a way to restore a phone to factory condition, although one is coming. Only Windows users have access so far, but developer CLShortFuse is planning Linux and Mac ports here as well. By its nature, the app carries a risk as it exposes the security of any Android phone and risks bricking devices if there's an unexpected problem.

SuperOneClick is free, but the XDA-Developers forum poster is taking donations to help support development.
