Verizon upgrading capacity to handle iPhone?

updated 12:15 am EDT, Wed October 13, 2010

Latest leak pointing to iPhone inevitability

Verizon Wireless is reportedly upgrading its network capacity to handle the onslaught of iPhone usage, sources have told the Wall Street Journal. The carrier is said to be participating in ongoing discussions with Apple, in an attempt to prepare its networks for the surge in data usage expected with an iPhone launch.

Earlier leaks suggested Verizon is trying to avoid reliability problems that plagued AT&T. The latter carrier was widely criticized for failing to upgrade its bandwidth capacity as iPhone sales accelerated. Users reported slow data speeds and dropped calls, especially in urban areas such as San Francisco.

Verizon is said to be in a better position, as its networks have already dealt with increasing data usage brought by Android handsets and other smartphones. CTO Tony Melone claims the "Android experience" has bolstered the company's confidence to manage a "great data network." The executive suggests Verizon is "planning for growth," although he declined to name the iPhone as a specific factor guiding its infrastructure strategy.

The carrier has acknowledged plans to update its networks to support simultaneous voice and data usage, a factor which is seen as necessary to appease Apple and match functionality available to AT&T subscribers.

Although a Verizon iPhone has yet to be officially confirmed, sources suggest the offering is slated for early 2011.

Verizon CEO Drives Red Car And Eats At KFC

'This heavily suggests iPhone is going to Verizon...'

Seriously, can we STOP speculating about if and when iPhone is going to Verizon? It seems like every week there's some 'likely' reason the holy marriage between iPhone and Verizon will be complete... AND EVERY WEEK, IT DOESN'T HAPPEN.

So give it a break already. Go dig up some real news. And when the next idea like this comes up, just let it go. When iPhone and Verizon finally do merge, we won't hold it against you for not warning us that "Verizon CEO Changes Diet, Eats At Subway, Has Brilliant Idea To Bring iPhone home".

Then we can all start speculating about how it's going to kill AT&T's business, how much they'll flounder, suffer, stock prices will fall, blah blah blah...

A Verizon iPhone would be great!

I'd buy a Verizon iPhone for the fact that AT&T does not provide wireless service in my area. What I'd enjoy the most out of a Verizon iPhone is watching those that hate Verizon (I won't mention FBJ's name) or those that say it ain't gonna happen go ballistic. If an iPhone isn't in my future, no big deal, there are plenty of other Apple products for me to enjoy.

    Rumors are worthless...

I'm sure the iPhone to Verizon will happen eventually but it will get there when it gets there. I'm sure all those Android handsets require a lot of bandwidth, too. Every carrier is going to have to start beefing up their networks as smartphones continue taking over. All the networks are going to squeezed until newer transmission technologies are used or as WiFi usage widens. It's probably for the best that iPhone use is spread over several carriers so as not to overload any one carrier.

I'll be glad when the iPhone goes to Verizon so I won't have to read any more iPhone to Verizon rumors.
