AT&T to sell 3G iPad in-store on October 28

ATT counters Verizon deal with 3G iPad in-store

AT&T didn't let Verizon's iPad deal go unanswered today and said it would carry the iPad in its own stores on October 28. The original iPad supporter will stock only the existing 3G iPads rather than the Wi-Fi plus MiFi combos at the rival carrier. Its plans remain the same and give 250MB of monthly, prepaid bandwidth for $15 or 2GB for $25; iPad buyers don't need to sign up in-store.

The Apple tablet will go on sale at AT&T stores the same day as they do at Verizon, October 28, and will involve the same 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models for prices of $630, $730 and $830 respectively.

Apple has been rapidly expanding its dealer market for the iPad in just the past few weeks and has become available at Target with Walmart due Friday. The company is believed eager to head off not only Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook retail sales but Android tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which will be sold carrier-subsidized and could pose a threat without iPads also in the stores.
