Microsoft patent reveals reconfigurable keyboard

A patent application from Microsoft filed back in April has become available online, revealing the software giant may be working on a physical keyboard that can read touch inputs. It could also change the function of its keys depending on the application that's running. It could, for example, show weapons shortcuts in a game or cut and copy controls when working on a spreadsheet.

The keyboard would also let users change the case of a letter without having to touch the Shift or Caps Lock keys simply by sliding their finger up or down on the key. Other gestures could perform other changes to the key's effect.

Calling the keyboard an adaptive input device in the patent, Microsoft notes a light source is under the keyboard's keys and an LCD that would display the different key configurations.

There is no indication in the patent if or when Microsoft will manufacture such a PC or keyboard. [via GoRumors]
