Netflix streaming to get Dolby Digital Plus audio

Netflix this morning said it would add 5.1-channel surround sound to its Internet streaming component. Dolby Digital Plus will be embedded in movies and give any supporting title the extra audio depth. The movie service argued that it wanted a format that could reach as many devices as possible.

The PS3 will be the first device to get Dolby surround in Netflix and should see the feature go live October 18, which may represent the day for disc-free Netflix support on Sony's console. More hardware should get support "over time," the list of which wasn't given but could include Mac and Windows computers as well as the Xbox 360.
