Sony to let Foxconn, Wistron build its LCD HDTVs

In order to save money, Sony will outsource production of its high-end LCD HDTV sets to Taiwanese makers, Digitimes reported. Foxconn is being rumored to get the contract to produce Sony's frameless sets, while Wistron is said to be producing the Google TV family. None of these companies are commenting on these rumors, however.

Sony is expected to outsource between 70 and 80 percent of its total LCD TV production in 2011, with Foxconn getting the lion's share at between 15 and 18 million units. Wistron may produce between 7 and 8 million sets for Sony. Total production for 2011 is expected to be near 36 million sets. An outsourcing of high-end models such as this is a first for Sony.
