Netflix suffers hours-long outage, may be 20% of net traffic

updated 02:00 pm EDT, Fri October 22, 2010

Streaming Netflix service down for hours

Netflix subscribers couldn't access the streaming movie service for a few hours on Thursday, according to a Thursday Huffington Post report. Netflix admitted the problem via Twitter and updated its status nearly three hours later saying the service is back online, though it warned some users and some devices cannot get onto the service. The outage happened just hours after the company posted its highest ever share price.

Netflix has both streaming and DVD by mail services in the US, and a streaming-only monthly service in Canada and other countries. The company has recently been heavily investing in buying rights for streaming videos, which, in the July to September period, reflects an 11-fold increase from the same time last year.

The outage may point to a need for Netflix to upgrade its data centers and related technology in the face of increasing demand. Netflix subscribers now account for about 20 of the peak-time evening Internet traffic, or double that from YouTube.
