LaCie 2Big USB 3 gets speed, 6TB
LaCie today upgraded its external hard drives to both speed up and take advantage of a new wave of 3TB hard drives. The 2big USB 3.0 uses two of the drives to both hit 6TB and speed up by about 20 percent. LaCie estimates a peak transfer speed of 306MB per second, which it claims is the fastest ever for a two-bay RAID drive.
The d2 USB 3.0 has been given a similar 3TB upgrade, but as a single drive it peaks at a slower but still fast 156MB per second. Either drive can work on USB 2.0 as a fallback, although their speeds will be limited by the slower external link. Owners of the 2big can set it to a RAID mirror or "just a bunch of disks" if they need either redundancy or two separate partitions.
Both drives work with Macs and Windows PCs, although OS limits require at least Windows Vista or Mac OS X 10.5 to see more than 2TB of space.
