Vudu lands Boxee deal for streaming movies
Vudu today landed a coup for its presence in digital media hubs and said its streaming movie service would reach Boxee devices. Both the imminent Boxee Box and the clients for Linux, Macs and Windows PCs will have access to the full catalog. Only the Boxee Box will have full support for 720p and HDX-based 1080p, as the desktop apps will so far be limited to standard definition.
The feature should be available across all of the available platforms in November. Computer client downloads are free, while the Boxee Box hardware ships on November 10 for a $199 street price. Movies carry their typical rental rates, although it comes just as Vudu is running a $2 rental promo.
Obtaining Vudu may be an important win for Boxee, which has had a difficult time obtaining large-scale commercial video for the Boxee Box. Competitors like Apple and Roku have had the advantages of either own services like iTunes or else deals with established media services like Netflix. Apple TV is also limited to 720p.
