iPhone affecting Mac's web share more than Windows

Net Applications has Mac below 5pc, iOS up

iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad are having more of an effect on the Mac's share of the web than Windows, Net Applications found in its report for October. The Mac has dipped below five percent share for the first time in about a year, but it came mostly as iOS grew to a new high of 1.25 percent of all web traffic. Windows made a significantly smaller gain and was also still near its lowest ever point, at 91.12 percent.

The stats trackers also noted that Mac share was up in the US, where it hit a new high of 11.41 percent. Microsoft's platform is now down to 83.45 percent in the country. Mobile devices had a much larger influence than abroad; iOS was up to 2.7 percent, while Android was at 1.07 percent where it would normally represent just 0.27 percent worldwide.

Researchers didn't try to explain the shifts, though a full-time return to work and school usually leads more to use Windows systems when at work and to turn to mobile for personal use when away. Apple's record iPhone sales this summer also likely played a role by encouraging more mobile use overall.

Browsers in the meantime repeated an ongoing trend for Apple and Google gaining at the expense of the incumbents. Internet Explorer fell sharply and hit a new low of 59.26 percent worldwide, but Firefox also dropped to 22.82 percent. Chrome meanwhile gained half a point to hit a record 8.47 percent, almost all of it now represented by version 7, while Safari also climbed up to 5.33 percent.

    Lowest ever?

"Windows made a significantly smaller gain and was also still near its lowest ever point, at 91.12 percent."

No, not lowest 'ever,' just lowest in recent history.

WAY back when the web was young, Macs had a much higher position of usage. Windows came in later and took over.
