G-Tech unveils G-Drive Slim as MacBook Air partner

Hitachi's G-Technology badge today unveiled what it believes is the world's thinnest external hard drive, the G-Drive Slim. The portable storage uses the already very thin Travelstar Z5K320 320GB drive to make an enclosure that's just 9.9mm (0.39in) tall and weighs just five ounces, making it easier to carry than most alternatives. G-Technology conceives of it as an ideal companion drive for a MacBook Air and gives it an aluminum shell that fits in with the look of most Macs.

The design is pitched as more than cosmetic. The drive itself is shock-protected, and the aluminum shell acts as a passive heat sink that keeps it cool without having to use active cooling. It comes powered entirely off of the USB 2.0 port and is already pre-formatted for Macs.

Just the one capacity is available for the Slim, which costs $100. Sales start today both online and at Apple's retail stores.

    Very nice disk but...

The Macbook Air, specially the 13'' with the 1440x900, is a great piece of engineer and architecture, but there is a but... :-) ... the weak point is having only USB2 and not USB3... Sorry! But USB2 is speed limited and the 250 SSD Max disk space is to short.

And do not telling me about the future LightPeak eternal wait. Is great, but is not ready and will be no compatible with all the USB2 devices that exist today, like USB3 is.

So, there is the But about this disk, is USB2 only. :-)
