Samsung Galaxy S first phone with Wi-Fi Direct
The Wi-Fi Alliance has quietly certified Samsung's Galaxy S line as the first to officially support the new Wi-Fi Direct standard. The approval gives at least the reference phone, but also likely variants such as the Fascinate and Vibrant, support for the direct wireless sharing feature. Support had been almost exclusively limited to Wi-Fi chipsets until now.
Wi-Fi Direct lets a device connect directly to another to share media and other files, or to play multiplayer games, without having to first use a router. Only one of the devices needs to support Direct, and the format can use the full speed of Wi-Fi. Previous devices have usually relied on Bluetooth.
