Panel offers standard 800x480 resolution

Samsung's mobile display division is currently demonstrating a new flexible AMOLED display this week at the FPD International expo. The panel, which measures 4.5 inches, is designed around the 800x480 resolution common to many of the latest smartphones. Durability appears to be improved from earlier technology, as the new panel can withstand folding down to a radius of just 1cm.

Researchers from Taiwan's Industrial Research Institute recently previewed a similar AMOLED panel measuring six inches from corner to corner. The display was just 0.1mm thick, while the folding radius was slightly larger at 5cm.

Both companies appear to be using a new fabrication process that avoids glass as a substrate layer. The technology is said to be a significant step forward toward mass production, although it is still unclear if the latest flexible panels will actually arrive on the market in the near future.
