Briefly: Sony VAIO Z review

We test Sony's VAIO Z ultraportable


The Sony VAIO Z is designed to blur the distinction between regular ultraportables and full-size notebooks. At least in theory, it should be as fast as even some desktop replacements but still svelte enough to fit in tight spaces. The design induces sticker shock at $1,800, but we'll learn in our VAIO Z review whether that gets the best of both worlds and draw some comparisons with the new MacBook Air.

    Looks powerfull...

    Just looking for the hardware, it looks very powerful, well engineered and design, indeed! What a great screen resolution! However the price could be to high for my taste, unless they correctly convert the dollar price to Euro, unlike Apple do it for Europe.

    Factions apart, I think this Sony Vaio is a great alternative for Apple MacBooks Series. But I am curious to see the next MacBook and MacBook Pro series.

    Now been a little ironic, the week point of this Vaio is to run Windows and not OSX :-) The alternative is to install Linux for notebooks on dual boot.

    That looks strangely familiar. Where have I seen that design before, let me think. Oh yea! That's where I saw it! On my Macbook Pro! Jiminey Cricket!

    If it was priced one grand lower, that would seem more realistic, but come on. It costs more than an MBP and can only run windows! And where's the multitouch?

    it *is* powerful!

    I've got one of these and I love it.

    A few things over the MBP:
    1. Amazing display. I have the upgraded display at 1920x1080 on the 13.1". Love it.
    2. BluRay
    3. Linux. (with compiz, I like the interface better than OS X, though, that's my taste. LaunchBar would be nice, as would QuickSilver, although that actually shouldn't be hard to implement.)

    Drawback - the graphics switching wasn't that easy to get going, and it's not hot switchable. And, yeah, I do really miss MultiTouch. There are some similar gestures that make it easy to switch between, but it's not as nice.
