Max speeds of 75Mbps, data-only plans at first

DoCoMo of Japan will open its fourth-generation LTE cellular network for data use only on Dec. 24th, boasting speeds up to 10 times faster than the current 3G service. Maximum download rates may hit 75Mbps, with maximum upload speeds about half that, or 37.5Mbps. Eventually, the company suggests, download speeds on LTE will reach 300Mbps. On launch, the service will cover large portions of Tokyo, and also be available in parts of Nagoya, Osaka and a few other areas, with coverage reaching most major cities by April of 2011. Voice communication will be added to the network in April, when LTE-compatible phones begin going to sale in Japan.

The network, written as "Xi" but intended to be pronounced in English as "Crossy," will primarily be accessed through USB data terminals for laptops (as seen below) until voice capability and plans are added in April. Typical data throughput will be closer to half the maximum speed, the company says, but can reach its peak in certain areas.

Data plans will be offered in two packages; "Xi Data Plan" is aimed at casual users and charges higher rates but does not require a contract. Customers on this plan can choose either 3GB for 2470 yen (~$30 US) or 5GB for 7980 yen (~$99) per month. Overage charges for either limit would also apply.

The "Xi Data Plan Ninen" requires a two-year contract, and offers either 3GB for 1,000 yen ($12.50) or 5GB for 6510 yen ($80) per month, with an overage charge of 2425 yen ($33) for each 2GB of additional data. During the introductory period from December to April 2012 (when the network is expected to be fully nationwide), however, customers can get "unlimited" data for a maximum charge of 4935 yen ($60) per month.

Billing rates for voice plans have not yet been announced.
