Moto Droid Pro gets priced and dated for Verizon
Verizon today officially set down launch details for the Motorola Droid Pro. The Android 2.2 rival to the BlackBerry will be available to pre-order on Tuesday and should ship November 18 for $180, albeit after a $100 rebate and a two-year contract. It needs a smartphone plan and can also support world roaming plans through its GSM support.
The design has been characterized as one of the biggest risks to RIM in the US as it's one of the few Android phones to have a fixed, hardware QWERTY keyboard while still supporting the full Android feature set. It only has a 3.1-inch, 480x320 screen but uses the same 1GHz TI OMAP processor as the Droid X and Droid 2, giving it enough power to run as smoothly and to support 3D gaming or other tasks that are off-limits to current BlackBerry phones. A five-megapixel camera and 3G hotspot creation are also standard.
Apart from the form factor, most of the concessions to business center on the inclusion of Quickoffice. Rumors have circulated of a version of the Droid Pro shipping without a camera for work environments with tight security.
We tried the Droid Pro at CTIA and were confident that it would do well in luring converts from the BlackBerry through the more modern OS and the hardware performance.
