Processors aimed at performance market
Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge processors are set to account for 20 percent of the company's desktop lineup by the first quarter of 2011, sources have told DigiTimes. Several motherboard makers are said to be preparing for an influx of compatible motherboards, which will be aimed at the performance market.
The Sandy Bridge architecture will bring graphics components into the processor itself, allowing cache to be shared with the core for improved video performance. Media tasks are also expected to be accelerated with Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX), which aim to enhance the floating point capabilities.
Motherboard makers reportedly anticipate a significant jump in shipments and profits as Sandy Bridge CPUs arrive on the market. Companies expect enterprise refreshes to help further strengthen sales in the first quarter.
Intel is set to formally launch its first Sandy Bridge CPUs in January at CES, while Asus and Gigabyte have already previewed their compatible motherboards.
