Ben Heck makes coach flight-friendly notebook

Gadget customizer Ben Heckendorn, better known as Ben Heck, has along with element14 created a dual-positioned notebook known as the Coach Laptop that aims to improve working comfort during flights. The creation removes the screen of a notebook from its traditional hinged location in favor of a raised location that will keep it away from the reclined seatback of a passenger in front. Heck removed the LCD screen from the arms and repositioned it to the ends of the arms, letting users type under the screen without sacrificing viewing angle.

"There's barely enough room in the coach section of planes for your carry-on, let alone your laptop, so it can be extremely frustrating when the person in front of you reclines their seat, limiting your already-cramped space when you're trying to get work done," Heck said. "After seeing numerous people annoyed with one another in this situation, I had a project idea for a more space-savvy laptop to try to keep the 'friendly skies' friendly."

The build of the space-efficient notebook is detailed in episode five of the bi-weekly Ben Heck Show, with a teaser embedded below. The full, near 18-minute episode, is available for viewing here.
