Google TV exec downplays threat to networks

updated 08:40 pm EST, Wed November 10, 2010

Company is "not trying to replace cable"

Google TV product manager Rishi Chandra has worked to downplay suggestions that the search giant's set-top box represents a threat to traditional television networks. Chandra also claimed "cord cutting is not happening anytime soon," which is a reference to some customers who have dropped their cable service as the availability of streaming content has continued to expand.

"We're not trying to replace cable," Chandra said, before repeating the sales pitch that the company is going for "TV and web" rather than "TV or web."

Despite Google's intentions and marketing focus, the company's efforts have yet to convince many content providers that see the efforts as competitive instead of collaborative. ABC, CBS and NBC were the first networks to block the device, while SyFy and Fox made the same moves this week.

As Google continues to struggle to establish partners, Chandra admits that the whole Google TV project and platform is in its "very early days." The executive also points out that the company has managed to attract many other content owners "who welcome Google TV." [via TechCrunch]
