Samsung shows thin LCD and bendable OLEDs at FPD

Samsung's display group showed a slew of new display technology at the FPD display expo that hint at its long-term plans. Beyond the seven-inch Super AMOLED, it showed a dual-screen, all-touch clamshell handheld where its AMOLEDs were the highlight. The device had dual 4.5-inch screens, each with 100,000:1 contrast; the design would behave like a netbook with a touch interface on the bottom and the main video on the top.

Also shown were 4.3- and 5.3-inch foldable AMOLEDs. Both had 960x800 images and the same contrast ratio as the dual-screen prototype. The company showed its 14-inch transparent notebook LCD and a more recently introduced 19-inch equivalent, though there's no indication as to whether or not either might reach production. The 14-inch model has just a 960x540 resolution and would likely need to be improved before it shipped.

Only one major LCD introduction reached the event but had significant ramifications for its nearer term hardware. A new 10.1-inch, 1024x600 LCD from the company measures just 1.8mm (0.07in) thick, even with the backlight, but which should be as sturdy as many thicker displays. Samsung showed the design running in both a concept notebook and a Galaxy Tab-style design, suggesting that it could reach a future tablet.

The thin LCD is due to reach production hardware in the next two to three years. [via NetbookNews]
