Accurate results could indicate high Apple sales
The Apple TV appears to be selling well at Amazon, but is curiously hidden in the site's sales rankings, notes Business Insider. The device is currently number two in the bestselling Digital Media Devices category, behind only the just-launched Boxee Box. The list puts the Apple TV ahead of the competing Roku XDS and XD; unusually, though, only the XD appears in the top 40 of Amazon's overall Electronics category, at number 20.
If the rankings were consistent, the Apple TV, Boxee Box and Roku XDS would theoretically be higher in Electronics than the Roku XD. Amazon has yet to respond to requests for an explanation. The figures may nevertheless bode well for the second-generation Apple TV, which is selling far better than its predecessor. Even more than a year ago in August 2009, two earlier models of the set-top were positioned at just 711 and 791 in Electronics.
The present discrepancy is speculated to signify either an error on Amazon's part or intentional omissions, whether by its own doing or by some request from other parties. The top three Electronics items at Amazon are all the vendor's own Kindle e-readers; Roku boxes, notably, support Amazon Video On Demand, whereas the Apple TV and Boxee Box don't.
