AT&T texts users with lawsuit settlement info
Regarding a class action lawsuit that dates back to the start of the year, AT&T today sent text messages to subscribers letting them know they may have the option of claiming a portion of the settlement in the case. AT&T was accused of illegally charging mobile data taxes and thus violating the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act and other laws. A settlement agreement was reached in July.
Subscribers were directed to a dedicated website with more information on the matter. This includes details of a hearing to be held on March 10 in Chicago in order to judge if the settlement is fair and approve the deal.
All AT&T cellphone customers who were charged Internet taxes between November 1, 2005 and September 7, 2010 are eligible to receive the benefits, which remain unspecified.
AT&T hasn't admitted to any wrongdoing but agreed to stop charging the taxes if the court approves the settlement. [via CIO]
