Nintendo expects another strong holiday season
At the BMO Capital Markets Annual Digital Entertainment Conference in New York on Thursday, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke about sales expectations for the upcoming holiday season and US sales of its gaming products and those of rivals. Fils-Aime expected strong sales of the Wii during despite new products from rivals such as Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's PlayStation Move. He also cited current sales figures for the various game systems to date in the US, with Nintendo leading the numbers.
For Nintendo, the figure included 43.1 million DS handhelds and 30.4 million Wiis. The Wii Balance Board has sold 12 million units since its 2008 launch. In comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 21.9 million units, while the PlayStation 3 found 13.5 million homes. The portable PSP had 17.7 million sales.
"The holidays are more important to Nintendo than to other manufacturers," Fils-Aime continued. Almost half of all Nintendo hardware sales in 2009 occurred in November and December, with rivals accounting for just over 40 percent of all sales during the same time period, the president said.
When it came to software, the difference is even greater. Nintendo sold 44 percent of all its games during the two-month holiday shopping period compared to 33 percent for the rest of the industry.
