EyeTV Netstream Sat gives computer-free satellite TV to iPad

Elgato unveils EyeTV Netstream Sat for iPad, more

Elgato today brought out its first satellite TV option that doesn't require a computer to view. The EyeTV Netstream Sat pipes any freely viewable European satellite TV through to a local network and can play it back to an iPad or iPhone through the EyeTV app (free, App Store) as well as Macs and Windows PCs. It works over both Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi and can rely on USB to feed DVB-S2 terrestrial video.

The initial form needs a computer for the initial web setup, but it can share its content both over Apple's Bonjour (zeroconf) networking as well as UPnP for Windows Media Center and other hub apps that can accept TV. iOS device support also needs an iPad, iPhone 4 or fourth-generation iPod touch due in part to the 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Shipments start November 22 and will cost about 200 euros ($272) after tax. Elgato hasn't said if it will have a computer-free equivalent in North American, although Canadian and US satellite is usually pay-only and might steer the company towards terrestrial ATSC instead.

    Nice.

I wish they would make that available here with an ATSC tuner. I love watching on the iPad, but leaving the computer on all the time is kinda lame.

    EyeTV app for iPhone

The EyeTV app is not free as stated. It costs $4.95 and is well worth it. My wife uses it on her iPad to watch HGTV from one of our Elgato tuners as she cleans house. The EyeTV app on the Mac cannot do this.
