Galaxy Tab Euro price drops to compete with Apple

European pricing for the Samsung Galaxy Tab has plunged in the past couple of days in what might be a sign of early trouble for the Android tablet. In the UK, the cost of the Galaxy Tab has dropped from an already partly reduced £700 ($1,109) to £470 ($745) at major portals such as Amazon and Dixons. French pricing remains unchanged, but Amazon Germany has also dropped its pricing to about 638 euros ($859).

Carphone Warehouse is charging £490 ($777) but is also selling the rarer 32GB version for the comparatively slight increase.

Both countries' prices put the tablet in much tougher competition with the iPad. Matching the 3G and 16GB of storage now costs more in the UK, at £529 ($838), while the gap has been narrowed in Germany where an iPad with 3G costs 599 euros ($807).

The drops have come in as little as two weeks after the British release and suggests that Samsung had misjudged initial demand or was faring poorly against Apple. Executives at Apple have repeatedly said they priced the iPad "aggressively" but haven't had significant challenges on this front until the Galaxy Tab arrived. A recent teardown discovered that Samsung has been charging more than needed as the cameras, its main advantages, only cost a few dollars more than the plainer iPad.
