Notebooks, TVs, e-readers follow behind

Of Americans planning to buy high-tech electronics during the holidays, most are picking the iPad or some other form of media tablet, says Retrevo. The shopping and review site recently conducted an online survey of over 1,000 people, which it says points to people spending 16 percent more on electronics this holiday period over 2009. After tablets, notebooks were the next most sought-after gadgets in the survey group, followed by non-3D TVs.

E-readers like the Amazon Kindle tied for fourth with iPods and other MP3 players. Netbooks came in fifth place, followed by 3D-capable TVs in sixth.

The Retrevo survey also points to clear divisions in terms of groups buying electronics. 70 percent of 18-34 year olds in the survey said they would be buying, as compared to 53 percent in the 35-54 age range, and just 31 percent in the 55-plus group. 65 percent of men reported interest versus 52 percent of women. When using smartphone ownership as a gauge, 83 percent of iPhone owners said they were planning to buy, next to 75 percent of BlackBerry owners, and 72 percent of Android users.

    that's a bunch of iPads

I don't think Android has that big of mindshare this season, but notice, the ereader category also includes android tablets (Barnes & Noble Color Nook).

There should be a few contenders in the Android space - Samsung Galaxy Tab, Viewsonic, Archos 70, B&N Color Nook - and others but...I don't think there is a standout there this year.

apple shouldn't have too much real competition until 2011.

Apple still has a good chance of selling about

six million iPads if there are that many available. Last quarter saw a lot of iPad inventory shortages, but that shouldn't happen this quarter. Ashok Kumar says only about 5 million iPads will be sold, but a Ticonderoga analyst raised iPad sales estimates from 6.5 to 6.6 million, so at least one analysts thinks there's a chance that iPad sales will be met. I can only hope for Apple's sake and mine, that Apple can at least sell six million iPad units or the stock will drop like an anchor regardless of a possible $21 billion revenue quarter. Apple share value is just a darn puzzle to me.
