Virgin US gives 1GB data for 20 dollars in Walmart

Virgin Mobile USA sparked its mobile data plans today by launching a new plan through Walmart. Those who have either the Novatel MiFi 2200 router or an Ovation MC720 modem can get 1GB of data per month for $20 when paying for access through the retailer. The plan is a direct balance between the lightweight $10 for 100MB deal and the $40 unlimited service.

Most competing carriers are offering $15 for 150MB to 250MB of 3G service. AT&T offers 2GB for $25 but only offers it on a handful of devices, like the iPad and Galaxy Tab. Verizon's iPad deal is identical to Virgin's but requires buying the Apple tablet and service at the same time. The MiFi allows as many as five devices to share a connection over Wi-Fi.

The option should be available immediately, though Walmart's site isn't offering the plan as of late Thursday morning.

    Dual-restriction plans

When are cellular providers going to be abandon these irritating dual-restriction plans? Why do they force us to choose a specific bytes-per-month plan when our usage varies from month to month? We don't pay water or electric bills with those sorts of restrictions. Why can't they offer us prepay plans that charge per byte used?
