RIM confident on avoiding BlackBerry ban in India

The long-standing security concerns between RIM and the Indian government can be successfully resolved, RIM said on Friday, according to Reuters. The confidence stems from RIM developing consistent global standards for lawful access that aren't specific to certain countries. In a statement, RIM said it has had a number of constructive discussions with the Indian government over the past few months.

No BlackBerry services or devices were banned in India so far, RIM was quick to point out, with all services still available. India threatened to cut off access to RIM's encrypted e-mail and BlackBerry Messenger services if it didn't get access to them, citing national security concerns in the wake of the Mumbai attacks two years ago.

RIM stands by its earlier statement of saying it cannot provide customers' encryption keys. Only the sponsoring business or organization has the technical capability to grant access to the e-mail.

Other countries have given RIM a similar ultimatum, and late in October, New Delhi and RIM reached an interim arrangement that allowed legal interception of BBM services had set up an interim arrangement for lawful interception of BlackBerry Messenger services with a final solution due by January.
