Vizio adds surprise 65-inch 3D TV

Vizio has quietly slipped out a new flagship shortly after the debut of its its first 3D LCD TVs. The 65-inch XVT3D650SV is 10 inches larger than the previous biggest 3D model but may have traded refresh rates, going down to 120Hz where the smaller sizes hit 480Hz. Viewers also get polarized 3D glasses in place of the active shutters that cost more but are more common elsewhere.

The panel has edge-lit LED backlighting and produces a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. All the other core features of XVT sets are in place, including 802.11n Wi-Fi for Internet apps such as Netflix and Vudu, Vizio's special keyboard-equipped Bluetooth remote and SRS audio boosting. Five HDMI ports, one each of other typical sources and three USB ports provide the connections.

Without formal news, the company hasn't given out a release date for the 65-inch set beyond "coming soon," but the LCD's price is noticeably lower than for most 3D TVs its size at $3,700. [via AVSForum]

Will it even come close to 72 inch LCD shutter gla

Vizio, that's nice, that it's 65 inch, but disappointing when thinking about the 72 inch LCD you were going to release for $200 less this year.

But let's say I accept 65 inches, the next disappointment is that you are releasing this for passive polarized glasses which is NOT as good as the LCD shutter-glass version you were going to release. Sure, it's a popular format, but it also suffers from more ghosting and a lack of clarity. But maybe this one will look better than usual? I've also heard that it may not give the full 1080 HD in 3D, but rather do 1/2 resolution.

Vizo's original plan was for a 72 inch LCD 3D, shutterglass TV for $3499
