Apple TV suffering color issues with Sony, Philips TVs

updated 11:05 am EST, Mon November 22, 2010

Fix said to be underway

Apple TVs have been experiencing problems with some Sony and Philips TVs, owners claim. On affected sets, the appearance of video output is altered; some symptoms include inverted colors, an unusual green tint, or outright black screens. Even though complaints first began in October, the exact cause of the issue is still unknown.

A few affected TVs include the Sony Bravia KDL-37S500, and Philips' 32PFL7404H/12 and 56PFL9954H. Apple is said to be aware of the problem, to the extent that engineers are contacting Apple TV owners asking for more details. People who have contacted AppleCare are reportedly being told that a fix is coming, although when it might show up has not been mentioned.

    re: uhhhhhh...

So what would you rather hear, 'you're screwed?'

A recall? I'd rather have it fixed.

And it's not an excuse, it's a status.

    excuse?

I have no idea what you expect them to do. Give you a free MacBook Air?

If you don't wanna wait, just return the damn thing and get something else. Good lord.

    It may be the cable

I had the same issue with my first gen ATV, I found it to be a cheap HDMI cable. Changed the cable and the fault disappeared.

We need the HDMI High/Low options from the ATV1

No doubt this is cause my the missing HDMI options HDMI High/Low that were added to the original ATV. I have a similar issue with the Original ATV if I don't use those options. When I got my ATV2, this issue reappeared and the only work around was to change my TV options, which was not what I wanted to do. Most people who have this issue, don't have the luxury of having the option to change those options on the TV, so if the ATV can't change them, you are stuck.

I believe this has to do with colorspaces on the ATV and how they are handled on the ATV. Traditionally consumer electronic devices used an HDMI values of 16-235, and computers use 0-255 (sorry if I am butchering this description), and if your display device can't auto-detect the playback device, and you can't switch one end or the other to match up then you get this type of display.

The HDMI-high (0-255) and HDMI-Low (16-235?) settings on the original ATV allow you to setup the output of the device to match up with what works best for hour TV...
