Dell sells Streak unlocked with Android 2.2

Dell today began selling an unlocked version of the Streak along with an OS upgrade. The new version, which can now work on T-Mobile or other GSM carriers, is the first in the US to ship with Android 2.2 out of the box. The upgrade gives it universal multi-touch zooming, Flash, USB tethering, 3G hotspot creation, improved performance and an auto-rotating home screen.

The new version carries a slight premium at $579 and is only available in black, but orders start today. Android 2.2 is still promised as coming for locked Streaks but now won't roll out in the US until "later in December," Dell said. OS patching was already underway but was limited to unlocked devices, most of which have shipped in the UK.

New colors are also on their way, including not just the Best Buy white model but a new Cherry Red version. Both are still SIM-locked to AT&T but can be had off-contract for $550 or $300 for those who sign up for two years of at least data.

The black and red models in Dell's online store can also now be custom-ordered with a 32GB microSDHC card alongside the 16GB of pre-supplied storage. Adding the extra space boosts the price by $119.
