Google and Miramax rumored in movie store talks
Google has been discussing a deal to get Miramax for its possible YouTube movie service, a rumor suggested on Tuesday. The search firm has reportedly been discussing rights with Miramax's prospective acquirer, Filmyard Holdings, and might get the catalog if the movie studio takeover goes through. The New York Post's sources also put Netflix in talks to get the Kill Bill publisher, but neither is likely to have an exclusive.
Efforts to get a movie store running have mostly lagged at Google, whose current attempt at rentals has been limited to independent movies and shorts. These may have accelerated after hiring a former Netflix executive, Robert Kyncl, to help negotiate terms. Where Google has usually tried to orchestrate deals from its Mountain View headquarters without much success, Kyncl has reportedly spent much of his time in Los Angeles and is better connected to the industry.
The fuller movie store doesn't have any timeframe. Google declined to comment on specifics, but it said it's "always talking to the studios about different things" and said that current Mirimax owner Disney is still a "valuable YouTube partner."
Much of Google's aim is thought to be a further monetization of YouTube, where almost all content is still ad-supported and usually home-made content that some major advertisers wouldn't want to advertise against. It could also play heavily into Google's plans to put Android and Chrome OS on better parity with Apple by producing a movie service guaranteed to work over the web and on mobile devices.
