XShot introduces Pocket XShot camera extender

updated 01:25 am EST, Wed November 24, 2010

Can be added onto regular tripod for extra height

XShot, who make a line of monopod camera extenders for point-and-shoot cameras -- as well as a custom case for the iPhone that attaches to the extenders -- has released the Pocket XShot, a retractable extension that measures 6.5 inches when folded, but extends to 30.5 inches, allowing users to take self-portraits or group shots without anyone having to stay behind the camera.

The Pocket XShot also features a tripod socket at the base, enabling it to be used as a height extension for regular tripods. It works with any compact digital camera, and can be used with the iPhone 3 or 4 models when used with the accompanying XShot case.

The extra length serves to create a better portrait picture with more background than one taken at arm's length, and avoids the necessity of leaving any member of a group out of shot, or asking a stranger to take the picture. The iPhone 4 is particularly well-suited to this because users can utilize the front-facing camera, allowing them to see exactly how the shot will look before its taken.

The extender can also be used to get better photos at concerts, sporting events and other places where height allows for a better picture. At 6.5 inches fully retracted, it can easily fit in a backpack, purse, pocket or camera bag, and weighs only 4.6 ounces. The maximum camera weight supported by the Pocket XShot is 1.25 pounds.

The Pocket XShot costs $30 and is now available for order.

    Nonsense

"The iPhone 4 is particularly well-suited to this because users can utilize the rear-facing camera, allowing them to see exactly how the shot will look before its taken."

This is utter nonsense. If you put an iPhone 4 on a stick and intend to shoot yourself using the rear-facing camera, by default, the front will be facing away from you and you will get no preview at all.

If you meant to say using the front-facing camera would allow you easy preview, you are correct, but the image quality will suck.

Great product; not so easy application with an iPhone 4 without adding a mirror.
