Google Earth 6 now out, brings 3D trees, more

The latest version of Google Earth, 6, is now ready for download. It brings with it 3D trees and an integrated Street View feature that lets users view the Earth from space and zoom in directly to Street View, which itself has been available only on the web for years. The Pegman mascot is now located in the main navigation control to make this easier.

Google created 3D models for more than 50 different species of trees and placed over 80 million in the world's largest cities, focusing on those with already high detail like New York or San Francisco. Eventually, Google will bring realistic images of threatened forests from around the world to Google Earth. Users need to turn on the 3D buildings layer in order to view the photos.

Google also made finding and exploring historical imagery much easier, by bringing it out where users can more easily find it.

The app is available for free for Macs and Windows PCs.
